How to get a plumber license in Minnesota

Requirements, license levels, and the issuing authority, sourced from Minnesota's official board.

The four years must be RECORDED, which is the single most consequential administrative fact for a Minnesota plumber. Register with DLI as an unlicensed plumber on the first day in the trade; the alternative is arriving at year four with time that the department cannot verify.

Minnesota plumber licensing at a glance

RequirementsJOURNEYWORKER PLUMBER, TWO QUALIFYING ROUTES, AND BOTH RUN THROUGH DLI REGISTRATION. Either at least FOUR YEARS of RECORDED practical plumbing experience as a DLI-REGISTERED UNLICENSED PLUMBER, or completion of a DLI-REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME. The word doing the work in both routes is REGISTERED. Minnesota counts experience it has a record of; time worked in plumbing without the DLI registration is not recorded experience and is hard to evidence afterwards. Register first, then serve the time. A written examination must be passed BEFORE applying for the license. MASTER PLUMBER sits above the journeyworker, and a PLUMBING CONTRACTOR license is the separate business credential needed to contract.
ReciprocityDLI reviews out-of-state plumbing experience against its four-year recorded-experience standard rather than applying an automatic reciprocity list. A plumber licensed elsewhere should expect an individual assessment of the documentation.
RenewalPersonal licenses run TWO YEARS, expiring on the anniversary of initial issue. Renewal requires all three of: TWO HOURS of DLI-approved continuing education, a $19 RENEWAL FEE, and a completed WORK EXPERIENCE VERIFICATION FORM. That third item is unusual, Minnesota asks a license holder to keep evidencing that they are actually working in the trade, not merely to pay.
