Register with DLI before starting the trade time. Minnesota verifies RECORDED experience, so hours worked without the unlicensed-electrician registration are difficult to evidence later, the registration is administrative, cheap, and the thing that makes the years count.
| Requirements | MINNESOTA CALLS THE JOURNEYMAN A "JOURNEYWORKER", and the ladder starts with REGISTRATION. Someone working in the trade before licensure registers with DLI as an unlicensed electrician; the registration is what makes the experience recordable, and DLI verifies the recorded experience before allowing an examination. CLASS A JOURNEYWORKER ELECTRICIAN. Evidence of sufficient recorded electrical work experience, then a pass in the written examination. The application follows the examination, not the other way round. CLASS B is the narrower journeyworker license for a restricted scope of work, and MASTER ELECTRICIAN sits above the journeyworker. ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR is the separate business license required to contract for work, held alongside a personal license. The practical sequence is: register with DLI, record the experience, have DLI verify it, pass the written examination, then apply for the license. |
| Reciprocity | DLI assesses out-of-state experience against its own recorded-experience requirement rather than granting automatic recognition. Because Minnesota counts experience recorded under its own registration system, an electrician arriving from another state should expect DLI to review the documentation individually before approving an examination. |
| Renewal | Personal licenses run TWO YEARS, expiring on the anniversary of initial issue. Renewal requires all three of: TWO HOURS of DLI-approved continuing education, a $19 RENEWAL FEE, and a completed WORK EXPERIENCE VERIFICATION FORM. That third item is unusual, Minnesota asks a license holder to keep evidencing that they are actually working in the trade, not merely to pay. |
