Requirements, license levels, and the issuing authority, sourced from Massachusetts's official board.
Anyone reading a national "HVAC license by state" table should be careful with the Massachusetts row: there is no single HVAC credential. A full-system technician here may need a refrigeration license from one bureau AND a gas fitter license from a different board, each with its own multi-thousand-hour apprenticeship.
| Requirements | MASSACHUSETTS DOES NOT ISSUE AN "HVAC LICENCE" BY THAT NAME. The cooling side of the trade is licensed as REFRIGERATION by the OPSI Bureau of Pipefitters, Refrigeration Technicians and Sprinkler Fitters, and the heating side can fall under the plumbing and gas fitting board instead. Which license you need depends on what you actually work on. REFRIGERATION TECHNICIAN. Documentation of NOT LESS THAN 6,000 HOURS worked as a duly licensed OPSI Refrigeration Apprentice under a Massachusetts Refrigeration Contractor, AND not less than 450 HOURS of study at an approved school. Both floors bind, and the apprentice license must be held while the hours are served. REFRIGERATION CONTRACTOR is the business-level license, and it is the contractor under whom apprentice hours must be served, so an apprentice needs a licensed contractor employer for the time to count at all. The prerequisites are set out in 528 CMR 11.00. GAS AND HEATING WORK falls to the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters, where a gas fitter license requires its own 5,100 supervised clock hours. FEDERAL LAYER: EPA Section 608 technician certification is separately required to handle regulated refrigerants. |
| Reciprocity | OPSI assesses out-of-state applicants against the Massachusetts hour and education requirements rather than granting automatic recognition; the 6,000 licensed-apprentice hours and 450 school hours are the binding tests. EPA Section 608 certification transfers freely, being federal. |
| Renewal | Pipefitter, refrigeration technician and sprinkler fitter licenses renew through OPSI's license renewal service on its published cycle. EPA Section 608 certification does not expire. |
