Requirements, license levels, and the issuing authority, sourced from Massachusetts's official board.
Massachusetts treats sheet metal as a licensed trade in its own right rather than as part of HVAC, which is unusual. If you intend to work here, enrol in a board-approved training program early: 750 classroom hours is roughly five years of evening classes and cannot be substituted with field time.
| Requirements | MASSACHUSETTS IS ONE OF THE FEW STATES WITH A DEDICATED SHEET METAL BOARD, and the requirement is heavier than most people expect for this trade. JOURNEYPERSON, UNRESTRICTED (J-1). Documentary proof satisfactory to the board of having completed, WITHIN THE TEN YEARS PRECEDING THE APPLICATION: 8,000 HOURS of LICENSED APPRENTICE training AND 750 HOURS of BOARD-APPROVED TRAINING CLASSES, over a period of NOT LESS THAN FIVE YEARS. Three separate conditions, and all three bind. The hours must be served as a LICENSED apprentice. The 750 classroom hours must be board-approved. And the five-year floor means the time cannot be compressed however many hours are worked, this is a longer minimum than the four years most trades require. The ten-year recency window applies to the whole package, so an applicant returning to the trade after a long break may find older hours have aged out. MASTER SHEET METAL WORKER sits above the journeyperson and is applied for on its own application. |
| Reciprocity | The Board of Sheet Metal Workers assesses out-of-state applicants against the same documentary standard. The 750 board-approved classroom hours are the usual obstacle, because most states have no sheet metal classroom requirement at all and hours from an unapproved provider do not count. |
| Renewal | Licenses renew through the Division of Occupational Licensure on the board's published cycle; the board's application pages carry the current renewal requirements and fee. |
