Requirements, license levels, and the issuing authority, sourced from Utah's official board.
The PRACTICAL examination is the part out-of-state plumbers most often underestimate: Utah wants to watch the work, not only read an answer sheet, and preparing for a written code paper is not preparing for that. Note also the contrast inside the same division, Utah's full journeyman PLUMBER needs 8,000 licensed hours while its full journeyman ELECTRICIAN needs 16,000, so the plumbing route to an unrestricted license is half the length of the electrical one. And the residential journeyman plumber license exists as a narrower, faster credential for anyone whose work is confined to houses.
| Requirements | JOURNEYMAN PLUMBER. 8,000 HOURS of LICENSED plumbing experience, worked under the supervision of a licensed journeyman or master plumber, then a pass in BOTH the Utah Plumber THEORY examination and the Utah Plumber PRACTICAL examination. Utah is one of the minority of states that still tests plumbers at the bench as well as on paper, and both must be passed. RESIDENTIAL JOURNEYMAN PLUMBER is the narrower license with its own lower hour requirement and its own examinations, and MASTER PLUMBER sits above the journeyman. Note the contrast within the same division: Utah's full journeyman PLUMBER needs 8,000 hours, while its full journeyman ELECTRICIAN needs 16,000. The plumbing route is the shorter of the two by a wide margin. |
| Reciprocity | DOPL separates Utah applicants from out-of-state applicants at the application stage and assesses incoming experience against its own licensed-hour requirement. The practical examination is not routinely waived, so expect to sit it. |
| Renewal | Licenses renew with DOPL on the division's published cycle. The division publishes the plumbing continuing education requirement and its approved providers on a dedicated continuing education page, check the provider is on that list before paying for a course, because unapproved hours do not count. |
