How to get a HVAC technician license in Tennessee

Requirements, license levels, and the issuing authority, sourced from Tennessee's official board.

The monetary limit is the part most often missed by technicians going out on their own: passing the examination is not the constraint, the reviewed or audited financial statement is, because it sets the ceiling on the size of job the new license may take.

Issuing authority: Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors, Department of Commerce and Insurance. Official page: https://www.tn.gov/commerce/regboards/contractors/license/get/contractor.html

Tennessee HVAC technician licensing at a glance

RequirementsTENNESSEE LICENSES HVAC AS A MECHANICAL CONTRACTOR CLASSIFICATION under the Board for Licensing Contractors, and the license is held by the contracting business rather than by the individual technician. EXAM PRE-APPROVAL. The board must pre-approve an applicant before they may sit the full mechanical (CMC) examination, and the pre-approval request carries a $50 fee and requires verification of qualifying work experience, three years for the plumbing CMC-A route, with the mechanical classifications assessed on the same documented-experience basis. THE FINANCIAL STATEMENT IS THE REAL BARRIER, and it surprises people. A contractor license application requires a REVIEWED or AUDITED financial statement prepared by a licensed, independent accounting firm, a CPA or LPA. That is a genuine expense before a license exists, and the monetary limit on the license is set from it. MONETARY LIMIT. Tennessee sets a dollar limit on each contractor license, calculated from the financial statement, and a contractor may not bid or perform work above it. The classification says WHAT you may do; the monetary limit says HOW BIG. Both are on the license and both are enforced. FEDERAL LAYER. EPA Section 608 technician certification is separately required to purchase or handle regulated refrigerants and belongs to the individual technician, not the company.
ReciprocityThe board publishes a reciprocation process for applicants holding a license in another state. It is an application route rather than an exemption: the classification, the financial statement and the monetary limit still apply. Confirm the current participating states with the board.
RenewalContractor licenses renew on the board's cycle and the financial statement must be kept current, since the monetary limit is recalculated from it. EPA Section 608 certification does not expire.
NotesThe monetary limit is the part most often missed by technicians going out on their own: passing the examination is not the constraint, the reviewed or audited financial statement is, because it sets the ceiling on the size of job the new license may take.
