Work under $10,000 is not state-licensed but may be regulated locally. EPA 608 required for refrigerants.
| Requirements | A commercial license with the Mechanical classification is required for HVAC work valued at $10,000 or more. Applicants typically need about 4 years of HVAC field experience and must pass two PSI examinations (Mississippi Mechanical Contractor trade exam and Mississippi Business & Law exam) at 70%, and demonstrate financial responsibility (net worth around $20,000+). |
| Reciprocity | Yes. The Mississippi State Board of Contractors publishes reciprocal agreements with named boards, and reciprocity means waiver of a trade examination only. The agreements that reach HVAC or refrigeration are: Alabama General Contractors Board, which waives all exams but Mechanical and Plumbing and can waive HVAC (current license, exam taken, no disciplinary action in the last year); Alabama Heating and Air (current license, must have taken the Alabama exam); Louisiana Licensing Board for Contractors, which waives all exams but Mechanical and can waive HVAC but not Mechanical or Plumbing (current license, must have taken the Louisiana exam); Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board, which waives exams only for Electrical, HVAC, Plumbing and/or Refrigeration (current license, exam taken, no disciplinary action in the last year); South Carolina Residential Builders Commission, which waives Residential Builder, Residential Electrical, Residential HVAC and Residential Plumbing (current license, exam taken, no disciplinary action in the last 3 years); and Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors, which waives all exams and is described by the Board as the only state that waives Mechanical and Plumbing (current license, exam taken, no disciplinary action in the last year). By contrast the Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board agreement waives all exams except any type of Mechanical (plumbing, boilers, process piping, HVAC) and electrical work, so it does not help an HVAC applicant. General conditions: a $50 fee for each exam waived, non-refundable; every applicant must still take the Mississippi Law and Business Management examination and submit a full application; the applicant must have held the license for 1 year and be free of disciplinary action for the period specified in the agreement; and licensure runs through a two-part verification form, Part 1 completed by the applicant and Part 2 by the reciprocal state's board.
