How to get a HVAC technician license in Idaho

Requirements, license levels, and the issuing authority, sourced from Idaho's official board.

The 576-hour school route is the single best-value decision available to an Idaho HVAC apprentice: it removes 8,000 hours, about four years, from the requirement. Very few states make that trade-off so explicit, and fewer still make it so favourable.

Issuing authority: Idaho HVAC Board, Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL). Official page: https://dopl.idaho.gov/hvac/

Idaho HVAC technician licensing at a glance

RequirementsIDAHO HAS A DEDICATED HVAC BOARD and offers TWO ALTERNATIVE ROUTES to the journeyman license, one with schooling and one without. Pass the examination designated by the board, and then satisfy EITHER: ROUTE ONE: a minimum of 8,000 HOURS of work experience as an APPRENTICE making HVAC installations in accordance with the jurisdiction's requirements, AND satisfactory completion of 576 HOURS of a board-approved course of instruction. ROUTE TWO: proof of 16,000 HOURS of HVAC work experience, with no classroom requirement. The trade-off is explicit and unusually clear: 576 hours of school halves the field-hour requirement from 16,000 to 8,000. For most people the schooling route is four years shorter, and that is the calculation worth doing before choosing. AN HVAC SPECIALTY JOURNEYMAN license exists for narrower scopes and is applied for on its own form. The rules are at IDAPA 24.39.70 and the statute at Idaho Code 54-5015. FEDERAL LAYER: EPA Section 608 technician certification for handling regulated refrigerants.
ReciprocityThe board assesses out-of-state applicants against these hour and education routes; there is no automatic waiver. An applicant with substantial documented field experience will normally qualify under the 16,000-hour route without needing the board-approved coursework.
RenewalLicenses renew with DOPL on the division's published cycle; the HVAC program pages carry the current renewal fee and any continuing education requirement. EPA Section 608 certification does not expire.
