The 75 percent pass mark is higher than the 70 percent most states use, and the "8,000 hours AND four years" wording means a worker cannot compress the timeline by working overtime. Register as an apprentice early: unregistered time is the most common reason an application stalls.
| Requirements | THE APPRENTICE REGISTRATION COMES FIRST. Michigan requires electrical apprentices to be registered with the bureau, and the hours only count from that registration, so registering is the first step rather than a formality. JOURNEYMAN ELECTRICIAN: 8,000 hours AND four years as an electrical apprentice, in work related to the electrical construction or maintenance of buildings or to electrical wiring or equipment. Both conditions apply, the hours alone do not shorten the four years. Pass the electrical journey examination with a score of at least 75 PERCENT. MASTER ELECTRICIAN and FIRE ALARM SPECIALTY TECHNICIAN are separate examinations applied for on the same bureau form (BCC-341). The licensing framework is the Skilled Trades Regulation Act, Act 407 of 2016. |
| Reciprocity | LARA publishes no standing electrical reciprocity list; an applicant licensed elsewhere applies to the bureau, which decides whether the out-of-state experience satisfies the hour and year requirements. Confirm with the Licensing Section before assuming an examination waiver. |
| Renewal | Electrical licenses expire on 31 DECEMBER each year and are renewable for not more than 60 days after that date. Renewal fees: master electrician $50.00, electrical journeyman $40.00. CONTINUING EDUCATION IS CONDITIONAL, NOT ANNUAL: a journeyman or master must show successful completion of a course covering any update or change to the state construction code within 12 months after that update, so the requirement bites in code-change years and not otherwise. |
