Louisiana electrician licensing at a glance

RequirementsElectrical contractor licensure required when project value exceeds $10,000; applicant passes a trade exam (Louisiana/National Electrical Code) and a business and law exam.
ReciprocityLouisiana replaced state-by-state reciprocity with passed-exam recognition on October 23, 2024. In a letter to state regulatory agencies of that date, LSLBC Executive Director Brad Hassert wrote that going forward, if an applicant, licensee or registrant holds a classification that requires a test in any other state and has passed that test, with no waivers, exemptions or grandfathering in effect, the LSLBC will accept that passing exam for reciprocity; the exam will be accepted for the classification chosen by the LSLBC and will be equivalent in nature, and all other requirements for licensure must be met including investigation of all violations or pending violations. The letter states that this change in procedure renders any previous agreements null and void. There is therefore no current list of named reciprocal states for Louisiana, and any published list of Louisiana reciprocal states predating October 2024 is superseded. Electrical work is an LSLBC classification, so electrical applicants come under this exam-recognition policy; requests are made on LSLBC's reciprocity request form.
RenewalLicensees choose the term. The Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors states that a licensee may renew for a one-, two- or three-year period on the online renewal form; renewal notices are emailed 60 days and 15 days before expiration, and a license lapsed for more than one year must be reapplied for rather than renewed. Continuing education: none for this classification. LSLBC's continuing education page states that continuing education applies only to the residential building contractor classification (6 hours per year) and states expressly that there are no continuing education requirements for commercial, mold, or home improvement contractors and registrants. Electrical Work Statewide is a Commercial classification, not a residential building contractor classification, so an electrical contractor licensee has no LSLBC continuing education requirement. Renewal fee amounts are not recorded here: the LSLBC fee-schedule pages returned HTTP 404 when checked, so no dollar figure was read on an official page.
NotesState issues the electrical CONTRACTOR license only. Louisiana does not issue a statewide journeyman/master electrician license; those are handled at the parish/municipal level.
