The 2,000 hours of approved post-secondary program is the requirement out-of-state electricians most often cannot match, because many states have no classroom component. Enrol in an approved program alongside the apprenticeship rather than planning to make it up later.

RequirementsIOWA'S CLASS A JOURNEYMAN ROUTE IS UNUSUALLY PRESCRIPTIVE ABOUT WHERE THE HOURS COME FROM. An applicant for a Class A Journeyman license must have successfully completed an APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING PROGRAMME REGISTERED with the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training of the U.S. Department of Labor. THE 8,000 HOURS ARE SPLIT, and this is the part to plan around: 2,000 HOURS of an APPROVED POST-SECONDARY ELECTRICAL PROGRAMME plus 6,000 HOURS of documented ON-THE-JOB TRAINING. Iowa expects a quarter of the qualifying time to be formal schooling, not merely a few code classes alongside the work. After the 8,000 hours are complete, the candidate is eligible to be SPONSORED by the Iowa Electrical Examining Board to sit the Journeyman Electrician examination, sponsorship is a step in its own right, and the board publishes its testing sponsorship requirements separately. The rules are at Iowa Administrative Code 661 chapter 502.
ReciprocityDIAL publishes a document titled 'Reciprocal Licensing Agreements with Other States' covering its licensing programs, and Iowa's journeyman license is named in both North Dakota's and Nebraska's published agreements, so the credential travels well across the plains. Check DIAL's current agreement list before applying.
RenewalLicenses renew with the Electrical Examining Board through DIAL on its published cycle; the department publishes its continuing education requirements separately.
