License levels in Colorado

Colorado electrician licensing at a glance

RequirementsResidential Wireman: 4,000 hrs over 2+ years of qualifying experience. Journeyman: 8,000 hrs over 4+ years, including at least 288 hours of training (safety, NEC and applications) from the last 8 years of experience. Master: bachelor's in electrical engineering + 2,000 hrs (min 1 year) construction experience, OR trade-school/community-college graduation + 8,000 hrs (min 4 years). All require passing the applicable exam.
ReciprocityColorado publishes both routes in statute but does not name reciprocal states there. C.R.S. § 12-115-113 ('License by endorsement or reciprocity - rules') provides that the State Electrical Board shall issue an electrical license by endorsement to a person licensed in another jurisdiction who presents proof satisfactory to the board that at the time of application the person possesses credentials and qualifications substantially equivalent to Colorado's licensure requirements, and shall issue a license by reciprocity where a reciprocal agreement for an equivalent license exists between the board and the electrical board or its equivalent in the state where the applicant is licensed. The board may specify by rule what constitutes substantially equivalent credentials, and § 12-115-107(2)(i) empowers it to enter into reciprocal agreements with states whose electrical licensing qualifications are substantially equivalent to Colorado's. The statute names no specific states: the list of states actually under agreement would sit in Board rule at 3 CCR 710-1 or a DORA-maintained list, and the Colorado Secretary of State rules server returned HTTP 403 to every automated request, so no state list is recorded here.
RenewalEvery 3 years. Active journeyman/master/residential wireman must complete 24 hours of CE per 3-year cycle (at least 4 hours on NEC changes; no more than 4 in safety), waived for the first renewal after passing the licensing exam.
