Requirements, license levels, and the issuing authority, sourced from Alabama's official board.
Two things make the Alabama journeyman card good value. The fees are among the lowest in the country, $115 for the examination and $35 for the license, $150 all in, and the license is a PERSONAL state credential, which many southern states do not issue at all. Alabama's non-restricted electrical contractor license is also recognised in Georgia's and North Carolina's published reciprocity arrangements, so it carries across the southeast rather than stopping at the state line.
| Requirements | ALABAMA LICENSES BOTH THE INDIVIDUAL AND THE BUSINESS, which is less common than it sounds: many southern states license only contractors. The Board of Electrical Contractors issues a JOURNEYMAN ELECTRICIAN license to the individual as well as an ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR license to the business, so an Alabama electrician has a personal state credential to hold and carry. FEES. The journeyman electrician license fee is $35.00 and the journeyman examination fee is $115.00, among the lowest combined entry costs of any state that issues a personal electrical license. The board's administrative code (Rule 2) sets the qualifying criteria, and applications are made on the board's Journeyman License by Examination form. |
| Reciprocity | Alabama's non-restricted electrical contractor license is recognised by several neighboring boards, Georgia and North Carolina both name Alabama in their published reciprocity arrangements, so an Alabama license travels comparatively well in the southeast. For applicants coming INTO Alabama, apply to the board and confirm current terms before assuming an examination waiver. |
| Renewal | Licenses renew with the Board of Electrical Contractors on its published cycle; the board's forms page carries the current renewal application and fee. Note that Alabama's HVAC board, by contrast, requires four continuing education hours annually with a hard 31 December lapse date, the boards run independently and their renewal rules do not match, so a contractor holding both credentials tracks two calendars. |
